How are Dust Mite Allergies Treated?

Allergy shots or immunotherapy for dust mite allergy symptoms are especially effective and can, in children, prevent the onset of asthma. The shots are administered regularly over a period of three to five years.
Each injection contains allergen extracts that, over time, desensitize the patient and eliminate the need for medications.

In the presence of severe symptoms, this therapy may be carried out in conjunction with a regimen of antihistamines and decongestants to manage the unpleasant symptoms while a longer-term solution via injections is being sought.

What can I do to Control Dust Mites in my Home?

One major aspect of dust mite allergy prevention involves reducing, as much as possible, your exposure to the dust mites. The greatest concentration of the mites will be found in the bedroom and it is there that you should concentrate your efforts. Use pillows that are stuffed with either rubber, kapok, or other synthetic materials and cover them, the mattress, and the box springs with plastic or rubberized casings. Avoid bulky bedspreads and comforters and wash all the bedding, including the pillows, every week in hot water.

Do not use vaporizers and humidifiers but do run a dehumidifier and shoot for a target of 50 percent humidity. Don't let clothes lies around. Hang them in the closet and close the closet door. Don't allow pets in the bedroom and don't have stuffed animals. Clean thoroughly and regularly with frequent vacuuming and dust with a damp or oiled cloth. You may want to wear a mask while cleaning and you can get special bags for your vacuum that are more effective at trapping dust

In extreme cases dust mite allergy control may mean that the carpeting in the bedroom has to go. If you feel that you must have carpeting, select a low pile. If rugs are present, wash them weekly. Your best friends, however, are wood floors, seamless vinyl and linoleum. Select wooden, leather, or plastic covered sofas and chairs and use closed book cases and cabinets rather than open shelves. Avoid Venetian blinds, dried flower arrangements, straw baskets, and wall hangings. Also, change the filters on your air conditioner frequently and select HEPA filters that will remove more dust and mold from the air. (You can also buy a portable air filtration unit specifically for the bedroom.)

Dust mite allergies are more common than the average person realizes. They often require a change in your environment and house keeping habits. If you feel that you have dust mite allergy symptoms, consult an allergist and begin to take steps to limit your exposure to these microscopic creatures who are uninvited guests in your home.
