Symptoms of Soy Allergies

Soya or soy bean is responsible for many symptoms of soy allergies. Soy is one of the main foods to produce allergic reaction worldwide and especially the soy milk allergy is widely spread and well know. Mostly infants seem to suffer from this problem as soy milk and soy protein is often added to soy milk and baby foods.

Do all Soy Products Cause Reactions?

No. soy oil does not seem to cause any problems for people who are sensitive to other soy products and it appears that certain fermented soy foods, such as for example a product called tofu, do not cause (severe) allergic reactions and symptoms like the whole soy bean does.

Can a soy allergy be life threatening?

A soy allergy symptom may eventually cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis. This is a sudden a potentially fatal allergic reaction that can affect different areas of the body within two hours of contact with the allergen (the substance that on is allergic to). The cardiovascular system can be affected and breathing difficulties can arise as the respiratory tract is halted.
The Symptoms of a Soy Allergy
Soy allergy testing turning out positive will leave you sensitive to a long list of possible effects and complaints as a result of your allergy. Some of the symptoms caused by this condition can be avoided by following a soy elimination diet. Symptoms are:
  • Acne (sudden severe bouts of acne).
  • Angioedema
  • Rhinitis
  • Nasal congestion
  • Diarrhoea
  • Atrophic dermatitis
There are many more symptoms but this depends on the individual and their response to a soy (milk) allergy.
Causes of a Soy Allergy
The cause of a (soy) allergy is most often hereditary, passed on to you through your genes. If any family members suffer from this allergy you are more likely to develop the allergy at some point in your life. This does however not mean that you are certain to get the allergy too. As a result there will not be a tendency to develop one specific allergy, but a person will be more sensitive and likely to suffer from allergies in general, not necessarily being an allergy to soy.
